While Step Up solicits input from many stakeholders, the perspectives of neighborhood leaders are especially important to our mission. The Resident Team was created to engage those who live in high-poverty neighborhoods in the organization’s decision-making regarding policies and issues to pursue.
The team is comprised of individuals from Savannah’s low-income neighborhoods who raise issues important to their communities. Many are leaders in Savannah’s neighborhood associations; others simply want to become more involved in improving their communities.
Members meet monthly as a team to discuss their experiences and to learn more about other neighborhoods. Some recurring themes have included public transit, youth engagement, crime, and blight in neighborhoods. Members of the Residents Team are also encouraged to take leadership roles not only by serving on Step Up’s board but also with other organizations and city agencies.
Team members represent Baldwin Park, Cuyler-Brownville, East Savannah, Feiler Park, Garden City, Midtown, West Savannah, and Southside Savannah, among other neighborhoods.
The Resident Team meets on the fourth Thursday each month, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. Meeting locations alternate between community centers in east and west Savannah.
